Covid-19 | Judge authorizes retail chain to open in Rio de Janeiro

On March 30, 2020, the retail chain Lojas Americanas was granted a decision to reopen its units, suspending the interdiction of several of its establishments by authorities in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

The judge of the case held, in line with the retail chain’s arguments, that its activities should be seen as essential and of interest to the entire population, especially because they are aimed at the sale of food and hygiene products, which are essential for combating the spread of covid-19.

The judge added that, in order to reopen stores, the company should adopt measures to avoid agglomeration, as well as WHO and Ministry of Health guidelines regarding store, employee and customer hygiene, under penalty of applicable sanctions.
