Covid-19 | Court of Appeals of Rio de Janeiro orders the reduction of the monthly fee charged during the period of suspension of attendance classes due to the pandemic

The Court of Appeals of Rio de Janeiro granted the preliminary injunction requested by five students of the medical school of Estácio de Sá University to reduce to 50% the monthly fees charged during the period of suspension of the attendance classes, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The students contended that the amount charged does not match the services provided in the distance learning method, adopted in response to the social distancing measures currently in use, which makes it impossible to perform the practical and laboratory classes characteristic of the course.

In the ruling, Judge Claudia Telles highlighted the “great disproportion between the service provided so far, corresponding to 50% of the curricular grade provided for the semester of this year, and the monthly fees charged by the institution in its entirety”.

Full wording of the ruling is available here.

No appeals have been filed against the ruling so far.
