Dias Carneiro strengthens core areas with promotion and hire

Latin Lawyer – Emilio Demetriou-Jones

Dias Carneiro Advogados has promoted an associate in its tax practice to partner and hired a transactional lawyer as counsel.

Tax practitioner Juan Manuel Calonge Mendez, 39, joins the partnership, while corporate and project finance lawyer Luana Komatsu Falkenburger, 35, arrives from Machado Meyer Advogados.

Both developments were announced on 1 July.

Mendez, who becomes the firm’s 15th partner in total, has experience advising international and local clients on direct and indirect taxes, international transactions and tax planning related to corporate and debt restructuring.

Prior to joining Dias Carneiro in 2015, he worked at Lefosse Advogados and Ernst & Young’s London office.

Falkenburger, who was a non-equity partner at Machado Meyer, focuses primarily on financings, capital markets and corporate transactions. She has experience in the infrastructure sector and has advised multilateral organisations, export credit agencies and investment funds in Brazil and abroad. As part of Machado Meyer’s corporate team, she helped Petrobras on its US$8.7 billion sale of gas pipeline company TAG in April.

Machado Meyer told Latin Lawyer Falkenburger left the company on good terms and thanked her for her work during her time at the firm.

Dias Carneiro is a mid-sized firm, known for its strong corporate, project finance, administrative and tax practices. The firm upped its partner count earlier this year, hiring a data privacy partner from Felsberg Advogados.
